Eine illustrierte Enzyklopädie der Baumarten Nordamerikas Zwischen 1888 und 1913 hat Romeyn Beck Hough ein Werk zusammengestellt, das auch heute noch als eine erstaunliche und einzigartige Leistung gilt: American Woods (Amerikanische Hölzer), ursprünglich in 14 Bänden mit auf Tafeln montierten echten Furniermustern veröffentlicht, ist ein Opus von atemraubender Schönheit, das Maßstäbe für das Studium von Bäumen und Holzarten setzte. Das bei TASCHEN erschienene, sorgfältig im Faksimile reproduzierte Woodbook, zeigt die Muster aller in den Originalbänden aufgeführten Arten. Für unser Vorhaben durften wir eine der höchst seltenen Originalausgaben als Vorlage benutzen, ein Original, das in sehr gutem Zustand erhalten ist und dessen Holzproben nur minimal beschädigt sind. Die Furniermuster zeigen jeweils einen Quer-, Radial- und Tangentialschnitt der Holzarten und veranschaulichen so die Charakteristika der Maserung, den Reichtum an Farben und Strukturen, die bei den zahllosen unterschiedlichen Baumarten zu entdecken sind. Diese Sonderausgabe enthält darüber hinaus Lithographien von Charles Sprague Sargent, auf denen die Blätter und Früchte der meisten Bäume dargestellt sind, sowie kurze Texte, die den geografischen Ursprung der Bäume, ihre äußeren Merkmale sowie deren Nutzung beschreiben. Innenarchitekten, Handwerker, Naturfreunde und Künstler werden diese wundervolle Sammlung von Holzmustern, zu denen auch Proben von Bäumen gehören, die heute sehr selten oder bereits ausgestorben sind, mit Gewinn studieren.
